Build a little Birdhouse in your... classroom!

Today's project came up when we were getting close to the next art show.  I seemed to have lots of 2D projects to hang on the wall, but wanting for variety I came up with this simple 3D project.  I love how simply it came together and I loved how they looked on display at the art show!

To make the bird cages we used strips of scrapbooking paper we had donated to the art room.  It was  fun to mix up all the patterns.  I have to say the thicker paper like cardstock works best to hold the shape of the birdcage.  I made a tracer shape for the younger kids to help them make a bird.  There was a body shape and a wingspan shape.  The wings could slide through a slit on the bird's body so the wings stuck out to the sides.  We hung the bird inside the cage using Christmas ornament hooks. I left the kids lots of freedom on this project again, and ended up with 2 fairies in the cages, one "Puffle", an owl and yes... a demon hanging from a noose with flames around the bottom of the cage (all made from black cardstock, of course).  Who am I to dictate art, after all?  Each artist did a lovely job creating a 3D cage and making their "bird" fit inside that cage.  Success!
I hung the birdcages from a string of lights that hangs along the ceiling of the art room until the art show.  They were a fun decoration!
